Disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar has been quietly removed from the Michigan Sex Offender Registry following a state Supreme Court ruling that barred retroactive registration requirements. The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Nassar is among more than 20,000 individuals whose names were purged from the public database because their underlying crimes occurred before July 1, 2011.

While Nassar is currently serving decades in federal and state prison sentences that will likely keep him incarcerated for the rest of his life, the removal of thousands of offenders leaves the public registry altered. The database is designed to assist communities in preventing future criminal sexual acts by providing legal names, photographs, primary and work addresses, ages, physical descriptions, and court records.

Michigan Supreme Court Ruling Eliminates SORA Requirements For Older Offenses

The mass removal stems from a Michigan Supreme Court ruling issued on September 9, which established that amendments made to the Sex Offender Registration Act in 2021 cannot be retroactively applied to require registration for older incidents. Because Nassar’s systematic abuse of hundreds of young athletes—including Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney—took place during his tenure with USA Gymnastics from 1996 to 2014 and Michigan State University until 2016, a significant portion of his conduct predated the July 1, 2011 cutoff date.

Although Nassar was not convicted in federal and state courts until 2017 and 2018, prosecutors explained that the timing of the criminal conduct rather than the conviction date dictated eligibility under the court’s interpretation. The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office explained that Nassar was sentenced in federal court in 2017 to 60 years in prison for possessing child sexual abuse material, followed by state sentences in Ingham and Eaton counties in early 2018 ranging from 40 to 175 years and 40 to 125 years for molesting female athletes under his care.

Eaton County Prosecutors Criticize The Purge Of The Public Registry

The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office sharply criticized the judicial decision on social media, describing the elimination of Sex Offender Registration Act requirements as deeply concerning for public awareness and community safety. The prosecutor’s office stated that victims and local residents expected the registry to provide a vital measure of protection and awareness, assurances that have now been stripped away by the court.

Prosecutors questioned how the decision aligns with community safety, pointing out that two members of the state Supreme Court faced election campaigns following the ruling. Prosecutors argued that the court could have applied a different legal interpretation to keep certain sex offenders on the list, asserting that policy debates regarding the effectiveness of such registries belong in the legislature rather than through judicial mandate.

Fallout From Historic Gymnastics Abuse Scandal And Legal Settlements

Prominent survivors testified before Congress in 2021 regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s gross mishandling of initial allegations made against Nassar in 2015 and 2016.

Federal prosecutors during the 2017 sentencing noted that investigators discovered 37,000 images of child pornography on his computers, illustrating the vast scope of his crimes alongside his abuse of athletes who treated him as a trusted medical provider.

Judicial Campaigns And Policy Debates Ahead In November

With the Michigan Supreme Court’s September 9 ruling taking immediate effect and nearly half of the state’s registry wiped out, legal and political scrutiny remains focused on the judiciary. Because two members of the state’s high court campaigned during the fall election cycle, questions regarding victim safety and registry transparency emerged as prominent local issues. Prosecutors maintain that any future adjustments to sex offender registration parameters should be addressed by state lawmakers rather than court decisions affecting individuals whose crimes occurred before July 2011.
