Kyle Larson Crash Dashes Indy 500 Hopes, “Double” Attempt in Jeopardy

Kyle Larson’s bid for the Indy 500/Coke 600 double faced a major setback after a mid-race crash at indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, who started 19th, lost control of his car on a restart, triggering a multi-car incident.
Running in 18th position, Larson appeared to downshift heading into Turn 2, unsettling his car. He spun across the track and collided with the outside wall, also collecting Kyffin Simpson and Sting Ray Robb. All three drivers were forced to retire from the race.
Simpson spun and came to a stop against the wall at the exit of Turn 2, while Robb’s car hit the tire barriers on the inside of the track.
“It was a bit crazy there on the start,” Larson said after the incident. “I got tight behind Takuma [Sato]… I think I got loose and kind of got all over the place…I spun. Just hate that I got a little too eager there on the restart and caused that crash. So, hate it for everybody that also got caught up in it.”
“Just bummed out, so I’ll try to get over this quickly and get on to Charlotte, and just forgot about it,” Larson added.
Larson is slated to finish 27th in the Indianapolis 500. He will now head to Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600, where he is scheduled to start on the outside of the front row. This IndyCar crash puts the entire ”double” in jeopardy.
With his participation in both races, Larson is set to become the fifth driver to attempt the Double — competing in both the Indy 500 and Coke 600 on the same day. Though, the crash diminishes his chances of matching Tony Stewart’s achievement of completing all 1,100 miles.
What’s next
Larson’s immediate focus shifts to the coca-Cola 600, but the feasibility of completing both races remains uncertain following the Indy 500 incident. The NASCAR Cup Series event in Charlotte is still on the schedule.
