A man died on April 11, 2026, after a suspect stole a running vehicle from a Walmart parking lot in Las Vegas and crashed it, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Police responded to reports of a traffic accident at 10:59 a.m. In the 4000 block of West Charleston Boulevard, between Valley View and Decatur, near South Decatur Boulevard.

Authorities stated that a black Hyundai Sonata was idling in the shopping center parking lot while the driver, who is a family member of the passenger, had gone inside the store to shop. The passenger was napping in the vehicle at the time.

A suspect entered the running vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed, with the passenger still inside. As the suspect fled, the Hyundai struck the rear of a silver minivan, causing the second vehicle to spin out.

The Hyundai continued northbound through the intersection of Essex and Charleston, where it eventually struck a large rock and a light pole.

Casualties and Injuries

The passenger in the black Hyundai was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead. The suspect sustained minor injuries in the crash and was also taken to a hospital.

The driver of the silver minivan reported minor injuries, while the passenger in the minivan was not injured. Both occupants of the minivan were taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

Investigation and Charges

LVMPD Lt. Monique Rodriguez described the incident as a crime of opportunity, noting that investigators do not believe the suspect and the passenger knew one another.

The suspect will face charges of kidnapping and open murder.
