Tip 1: NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra/Alan Gilbert/Karita Mattila et al. On February 13th and 15th, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, under the direction of Alan Gilbert, will present Richard Strauss’s operatic thriller, “Elektra.” Featuring Finnish soprano Karita Mattila as Klytämnestra, this performance promises a powerful and intense experience. As discussed in the latest episode of “Erstklassisch mit Mischke,” Mattila is a celebrated figure in the opera world.

Tip 2: Benjamin Appl A smaller, more intimate offering comes with baritone Benjamin Appl’s performance on February 17th. He will combine Robert Schumann’s “Dichterliebe” cycle with György Kurtág’s “Hölderlin-Gesänge,” creating a compelling juxtaposition of Romantic and modern sensibilities. This performance builds on Appl’s previous collaborations with Kurtág, a composer who continues to create despite his advanced age.

Kit Armstrong and Jan Caeyers

Tip 3: Le Concert Olympique/Kit Armstrong/Jan Caeyers On February 19th, Le Concert Olympique, led by Jan Caeyers and featuring pianist Kit Armstrong, will present a program centered around Beethoven. Their “Beethoven 27” project, aiming to perform 27 key works across the EU, offers a unique perspective on the composer’s legacy. The concert will include excerpts from Bach’s “The Well-Tempered Clavier” alongside Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and the “Storm” Sonata.

Tanya Tagaq

Tip 4: Tanya Tagaq Perhaps the most unique offering of the month is Tanya Tagaq’s performance on February 27th in the Elbphilharmonie’s smaller hall. Tagaq will present traditional Inuit throat singing, a centuries-old art form. As one of the few Inuit women professionally practicing Katajjak in Canada, Tagaq’s performance carries significant cultural and political weight, particularly in light of recent discussions surrounding Greenland.
