Late Night Eating and Blood Sugar: Timing Matters
Eating late at night has long been linked to health concerns, including insulin resistance and obesity. New research explores whether staying awake longer after a late meal mitigates these risks to blood sugar control.
A small study suggests that delaying sleep after a late dinner does not improve blood sugar and insulin levels. Instead,the body’s internal clock,or circadian rhythm,appears to be the key factor,according to Daisy Duan,MD,an endocrinologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Early vs. Late Dinners: A Closer Look
Duan and her team monitored 13 healthy adults in a sleep lab to investigate the effects of meal timing. Researchers determined each participant’s “biological night” by measuring melatonin levels in saliva, a reliable indicator of circadian rhythms.
For 24 hours,glucose and insulin levels were measured hourly via IV under three scenarios:
- Early dinner (three hours before biological night),with sleep five hours later.
- Late dinner (one hour after biological night), with sleep one hour later.
- Late dinner (one hour after biological night), with sleep five hours later.
all participants had eight hours of sleep and consumed meals tailored to their caloric needs. The study found that late dinners,regardless of sleep timing,resulted in 11% higher glucose levels compared to early dinners.
Study Limitations and Implications for Blood Sugar Control
Duan’s team acknowledges the preliminary nature of these findings, which have yet to undergo peer review.Ajaykumar Rao,MD,a diabetes and metabolism endocrinologist with Temple Health,noted the study’s small sample size and controlled habitat as limitations.
Rao believes the results are more relevant for diabetes prevention in healthy individuals.”The results suggest that the cumulative effects of eating late put people at risk for eventually developing insulin resistance, which is a precursor to diabetes,” Rao said.
He added,”When you eat later,your body’s response to a glucose load may be a bit dampened because your own insulin levels are not attacking that meal the same way they would otherwise.”
Aligning with Natural Rhythms
theresa Gentile, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, emphasizes the importance of aligning with one’s circadian clock. “You should try to pay attention to your body’s natural rhythms by noting when you start to feel sleepy in the evening,” Gentile said. “Aim to finish dinner at least a few hours before this time.”
Gentile suggests consulting a registered dietitian or using sleep trackers to better understand individual circadian rhythms and optimize meal timing for better health and blood sugar regulation.
