Vatican’s mediation Efforts in Venezuela
The Vatican has confirmed it attempted to negotiate a resolution to the political crisis in Venezuela, including exploring options for president Nicolás Maduro‘s departure. Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin stated the Holy See sought a peaceful solution to avoid bloodshed, engaging in discussions wiht Maduro and other regime representatives, but these efforts ultimately failed.
Negotiations with Maduro and Asylum Proposal
Parolin acknowledged reports from The Washington Post,published on January 9,detailing the Vatican’s attempt to secure safe passage for Maduro. Specifically, the Vatican reportedly explored the possibility of offering Maduro asylum in Russia.Parolin indicated the Vatican found itself “facing a de facto situation” after these negotiations stalled.
Current Situation and Calls for Democratization
According to Parolin, Venezuela is currently experiencing “great uncertainty.” He expressed hope for a move towards stability and economic recovery, emphasizing the precarious situation and suffering of the Venezuelan people. The Vatican has also called for “a democratization of the country.”
