Latin American Church Leaders Plan for Synod Implementation
A continental team tasked with the reception of the Synod in latin America and the Caribbean convened virtually on April 3, to discuss the implementation of the Synod’s final document.
Participants acknowledged the value of the letter from the Synod Secretariat, which outlined a plan for implementing and evaluating the final document. The team also welcomed the proclamation of a World Ecclesial Assembly in 2028. This assembly is intended to conclude the initial phase of reception and implementation, recognizing synodality as an ongoing process rather than an isolated event, linking it to the Jubilee of Guadalupano in 2031 and the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033.
Continental Reception Strategy
The continental team includes synodal fathers and mothers, representatives from Latin American ecclesial bodies, and the general and deputy secretaries of the latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM).
Prior to the World Ecclesial Assembly, meetings are planned at the diocesan, national, and continental levels throughout 2027.
“This provides a common working perspective similar to the experience carried out and projected by Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Father Pedro Brasesco, CELAM’s deputy secretary.
The team also reviewed the progress of the synodal path within the Episcopates, based on four regional meetings held in February and March. A report summarizing the reception of the document in each country was presented.
“This report arose from the dialogue with the general secretaries held in the four regional meetings organized by CELAM in the months of March and February,” Brasesco stated.
The report indicated that in most countries, bishops have addressed the text in their plenary assemblies, and many have assigned monitoring of the subject to existing commissions.
Upcoming Initiatives
In the coming days, the continental team intends to publish a pedagogical version of the final document for wider distribution. Additionally, the Cebitepal Training Center will dedicate a monographic issue of its Medellín magazine to the theme of synodal reception.
CELAM’s pastoral reflection team will develop material on the “synodalization of ecclesial structures.” The team also emphasized the importance of cultivating synodal spirituality.
These efforts are “in the line of hope and conversion as well as achieving a reflection that encourages to review the structures so that they are facilitators in communion and participation.”
A website is under development to collect and share examples of pastoral experiences, called “Synodality Footprints,” to inspire other communities. the portal will also offer dissemination materials on the final document, videos, and other resources for synodal formation and animation.
