Latvia Condemns Violence Against Protesters in Georgia, Expresses Solidarity with Pro-EU Movement
Riga, latvia – Latvia has strongly condemned the recent use of force by Georgian authorities against peaceful protesters demonstrating against the government’s decision to halt the country’s path towards European Union membership.
On December 2nd, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Georgian Ambassador Irakli Kurashvili to express its deep concern and deliver a formal protest note.
“Latvia views the actions of georgian authorities as a violation of international human rights standards and unacceptable,” stated the Ministry. “These actions contradict Georgia’s international commitments, including its pledge to strengthen democracy and the rule of law.”
The Latvian government called on the responsible Georgian authorities to instantly cease the violence, ensure the safety and protection of peaceful protesters, and hold accountable those responsible for any abuses.
Latvia expressed its solidarity with the Georgian people and their overwhelming support for EU integration. This includes those Georgian officials who have publicly criticized the decision to postpone EU accession talks until at least 2028 and reject EU funding. This move, seen as a meaningful shift away from EU integration, is viewed by many as contradicting Georgia’s constitution and the aspirations of its citizens.
