National Income overview

in ‌2023, the average gross monthly ‍income declared by Portuguese ‌taxpayers was €1,155 after personal income tax deductions. This ‌places Portugal behind Latvia in income rankings,⁤ wiht Luxembourg and Denmark leading the ‍way as⁣ nations with the ⁣highest incomes.

Meaningful regional disparities exist within Portugal. The Lisbon metropolitan area ⁣reported the highest average monthly income at €1,375, while the Tâmega e Sousa region recorded the lowest at €883.

At the municipal level, Oeiras stood out with the highest average‌ income, reaching €1,637 per month.

Poverty Rates and At-Risk Groups

Despite overall income levels, Portugal saw a⁣ slight decrease in the at-risk-of-poverty‌ rate, falling from 17% in 2022⁤ to‌ 16.6% in ‍2023.This translates to approximately 1.8 million people ‌living in‍ families with a monthly income below €632 per adult.

However, certain demographics face ⁤disproportionately higher⁣ poverty risks. Data indicates a concerning rise in poverty among seniors, increasing‌ from ⁢17.1% in 2022 to 21.1% in 2023. This means roughly one in five seniors ‍either lives alone with a gross income under⁢ €632 or resides in a household experiencing‍ poverty.

Vulnerable Populations

Single-parent families ⁢with children remain the most vulnerable group in Portugal.‍ Individuals living alone also experienced ‌a significant increase in their at-risk-of-poverty rate, climbing nearly four percentage points‍ from 24.9%‌ in⁣ 2022 to 28.6% in 2023.

Unemployment continues to be a strong predictor ⁤of poverty, with 44% of unemployed individuals ‌living in households below the poverty threshold. Retirees also saw a notable increase in ⁢poverty risk, rising from 15.4% in 2022 to 19.6% in ⁣2023.

This⁤ analysis reflects income data ⁢from 2023 tax returns and living‌ conditions surveys. Ongoing monitoring of thes indicators is crucial ‌for developing effective social and ⁣economic policies.
