Can Latvia Pull Off Another Stunner at the World Juniors?

The World Junior Championship is known for its upsets, but Latvia’s 3-2 shootout victory over host Canada on Friday sent shockwaves through the tournament. Now, the Latvians, riding high on their historic win, will look to keep the momentum going against another powerhouse: Team USA.Latvia’s victory, their third ever in the tournament’s preliminary round and first against Canada, was a testament to their resilience and goaltending prowess. Linards Feldbergs, a 2025 draft-eligible prospect, stood tall in net, making an astounding 55 saves. He even battled through cramps during the shootout, ultimately paving the way for Eriks Mateiko (Washington Capitals) to score the game-winner in the eighth round.

“The win against Canada meant partly a lot and partly nothing as two points doesn’t give us nothing,” said Latvia coach Artis Abols.”I’m very proud because you know the stats for Team Latvia at the Under-20 world Juniors … it’s just our third win in 40 games. We need at least two more points and the U.S. is the same level opponent (as Canada). We are happy, but need to start preparing for [Saturday].”

Latvia’s path to the quarterfinals wasn’t easy. Thay were shut out in three straight games at the 2024 WJC before a 6-2 win against Germany in the preliminary round. A 7-2 loss to the United States left them with an eighth-place finish.

Team USA,simultaneously occurring, will be looking to build on their remarkable 10-4 victory over Germany on Thursday. The All-Boston College line of Gabe Perreault (two goals, one assist), James Hagens (two goals, two assists) and Ryan leonard (two assists) combined for nine points in the victory, showcasing their offensive firepower. Defenseman Cole Hutson also had a standout performance with five assists, just one shy of the U.S. record for assists in a single game.

“we liked how we broke the puck out,” said U.S. coach David Carle. “We had some neutral zone turnovers and felt we knew during the game that that was an issue, and we got away with it, and we need to clean that part of our game up. Did some good things to score 10 goals, but we’re trying to continue to get better, learn and grow while winning.”

The matchup between Latvia and the United States promises to be a thrilling contest. Can Latvia pull off another upset, or will Team USA assert their dominance?
