Riga, Latvia – In a move aimed at fostering national pride and international recognition, Latvia’s parliament, the Saeima, has approved amendments to the ”Law on the Coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia.” Starting January 1, 2026, the country’s iconic coat of arms will be an optional feature on vehicle license plates.
The new law allows for the inclusion of the smaller version of the Latvian coat of arms on standard license plates for mechanical vehicles. Trailer plates will not feature the emblem.
Proponents of the amendment believe that displaying the coat of arms on license plates will strengthen Latvians’ sense of belonging and patriotism.They also anticipate that it will enhance latvia’s visibility on the international stage.
Latvia joins several other European Union member states, including Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Lithuania, in incorporating national symbols onto their license plates.
