What’s Happening wiht Electric Car Support?
The adoption of electric cars in Latvia and across Europe is being actively encouraged through a variety of national and European Union support programs. While navigating the specifics of these programs can be complex, significant strides are being made to promote environmentally pleasant transportation. Financial incentives, primarily in the form of grants and subsidies, are key drivers in making EVs more accessible.
European Union Electrical Support Programs: A Diverse Landscape
Support measures for electromobility vary considerably across the European Union’s member states, both in terms of effectiveness and financial volume.Southern European countries generally offer the most generous schemes.
Currently, 20 EU countries provide financial support for EV purchases, either through grants or subsidies. Notably,Bulgaria,Malta,Cyprus,Denmark, and Belgium do not currently offer unique financial incentives for buying electric cars.
The average financial support across Europe is approximately €6,300. However, this figure ranges substantially, from €2,000 in Finland to €11,500 in Romania.Countries like Germany and France have recently increased their subsidies to €9,000 and €7,000 respectively, resulting in a significant increase in EV demand. These measures are especially impactful during periods of overall car sales decline, stimulating the market and encouraging a shift towards greener transportation options.
| Country | Average Support (€) |
|---|---|
| Romania | 11,500 |
| Germany | 9,000 |
| France | 7,000 |
| EU Average | 6,300 |

Latvian Electrical Support Program: Details and Funding
Latvia’s electric car purchase support program, funded by the Emission Quota Auction Instrument (ECII), has experienced high demand, with initial funding being depleted faster than anticipated. Originally scheduled from 2022 to 2025 (or until the €30 million budget was tired), the program has received additional funding to meet the strong public interest.
The Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) has tripled the total funding to €30 million since the program’s inception. As of August 2023, the program has assisted over 5,600 households in purchasing environmentally friendly vehicles. Specifically, support has been granted for more than 4,200 electric cars, including over 1,000 purchases by large families.
Approximately 37% of all electric cars registered in Latvia have been purchased with the support of the ECII program. The amount of aid varies depending on the vehicle type:
- Used electric Car: €3,350
- New electric Car: Up to €9,000
- Externally Charged Hybrid: Up to €9,000
