KEM has announced a‌ supplier consultation, wiht the tender ‍expected ‌in February, for an “assessment of Nuclear Energy Development Opportunities in‌ Latvia.”

The assessment will focus on small modular reactors (SMRs) and provide data to inform policy⁢ and decision-making. The winning bidder ‍will analyse the feasibility of SMRs in Latvia, considering technical, ‍legal, environmental, societal, financial, and economic factors.

The contractor will evaluate Latvia’s ⁢current regulatory framework and suggest improvements to ensure compliance with international nuclear energy standards. This includes identifying necessary amendments⁤ to existing legislation across numerous areas, including radiation⁣ protection, nuclear facility safety, emergency preparedness,⁣ waste management, environmental protection, and financial regulations.

The study will ⁢also assess nuclear safety, potential locations ⁢for ⁣a nuclear power plant, grid development, workforce readiness, environmental impacts, and a cost-benefit analysis of nuclear energy⁢ in Latvia.

The contract is for one year. A detailed work plan is due within one ‍month of signing, a current situation assessment within⁣ three months, a technical SMR assessment within eight months, and an economic assessment ‌within ten months. The final report, consolidating all findings and development proposals,is due within one year.
