Latvian & US Foreign Ministers to Discuss Cooperation & Security

Latvian and U.S. Officials to Discuss Security, Economic Ties

– Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže is scheduled to meet with Melissa Argyros, the new U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, at 4:00 PM local time today. The meeting will take place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riga.

According to a statement from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the officials will discuss existing bilateral cooperation between Latvia and the United States, with a focus on strengthening ties in the areas of security, the economy, energy, and new technologies.

The United States is considered a strategic partner and ally of Latvia. The U.S. First recognized the Republic of Latvia on July 28, 1922, and maintained a non-recognition policy regarding the Soviet occupation of Latvia until Latvia restored its independence in 1991, providing significant support during that period.

The U.S. Played a key role in facilitating Latvia’s integration into both NATO and the European Union. This long-standing relationship underscores the importance of transatlantic cooperation for regional stability, a sentiment echoed by Secretary Rubio in a recent call with Minister Braže, where they emphasized the strength of the U.S.-Latvia bilateral relationship and its importance to regional security.

The meeting between Braže and Argyros comes as both nations continue to address shared security challenges. Recent discussions between U.S. And Latvian officials have highlighted the potential for deepening economic cooperation within the defense industry as a means to bolster security.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited media representatives to register their participation in a photo/video opportunity at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (K. Valdemāra Street 3) by 3:00 PM on February 19, 2026. The accreditation ceremony for Ambassador Argyros is scheduled to take place at Riga Castle this morning.

Latvia and the United States marked the 101st anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year. The security sector is described as the cornerstone of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity to explore new avenues for collaboration and reaffirm the commitment of both nations to a strong and enduring partnership.
