22nd January marked a significant day for Latvia’s Land Forces as Colonel Aivars Krjukov stepped into his new role as the Commander, succeeding Brig. Gen. Kaspars Pudāns who moved on to become the next National Armed Forces (NAF) Commander, effective 27th January.
Krjukov, a seasoned military professional, has outlined his priorities, which include implementing the operational defense plan, developing the national defense concept, and overseeing long-term NATO force development, including personnel growth, diversification, and modernization. "Increasing the land force numbers from 10,000 to 12,000 is a key priority," Krjukov emphasized.
Krjukov’s journey in the NAF spans over two decades, since 1997. He has held command positions in the Land Forces and other branches, served in multinational operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and acted as Deputy Military Representative at Latvia’s NATO/ES mission in Brussels. He also served as the deputy rector of the National Defense Academy.
Krjukov’s military education includes graduates from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Slovak National Defense University, and currently, he is pursuing higher command education at the U.S. Army War College.
