Launching a campaign to ensure traffic flow in Mauritania’s capital, Sahara Media
The national campaign to ensure a smooth flow and reduce traffic congestion in Mauritania’s capital, Nouakchott, was launched on Sunday, as part of the “Nouakchott Mobility in Horizon 2026” project.
Interior Minister Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed El Amin said the campaign includes multiple steps to improve traffic movement, including the development and expansion of the operations and monitoring center to monitor traffic violations, the expansion of the radar network on the main road axes, and create a digital platform for citizens to view the offenses registered against them and pay fines remotely.
The minister added that urban roads in the city have been prepared and bridges equipped with security surveillance methods, as well as reorganizing the streets and clearing them of slums, moving taxi stations to new locations, and installing traffic lights in the city.
The campaign is also planned to include strengthening the public transport system through dedicated bus routes, including the acquisition of 112 new buses and the expansion of three main axes.
Several government sectors are taking part in the campaign, including the Ministries of the Interior, Digital Transformation, Equipment, Transport and Culture, as well as local authorities and non-governmental actors, and it is accompanied by an awareness-raising and mobilization campaign through the media various. .
In its first phase, the campaign targets the provinces of Tevragh Zeina and Laksar and the busiest road axes in Nouakchott, with plans to gradually expand its scope to include the rest of the country’s provinces.
