Experienced mountaineer struck by falling rocks on Laila Peak; ground rescue underway

Islamabad, Pakistan – Laura Dahlmeier, the celebrated German biathlete who captivated audiences with her Olympic and World Championship triumphs, has been critically injured in a rockfall incident on Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. The accident occurred around midday on Monday at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet).

Dahlmeier, 31, a certified mountain and ski guide and an active member of mountain rescue, was hit by falling rocks. Her climbing partner managed to reach safety and sound the alarm.

“It was persistent that a helicopter rescue is not possible,” stated Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior local official in Ghanche district, where the formidable laila Peak, exceeding 6,000 meters (19,700 feet), is located. “the conditions at the altitude where she was injured are extremely challenging, and a team of foreign climbers will launch a ground rescue mission today.”

Shipton Trek & Tours Pakistan, the expedition organizer, confirmed that a ground rescue mission, comprising four individuals – three Americans and one german mountaineer – has been launched.

Rescue Efforts Hampered by Extreme Conditions

The severity of Dahlmeier’s injuries became apparent when a helicopter managed to fly over the site. Rescuers observed that the experienced mountaineer was “at least seriously injured,” with “no signs of life were detected” by the aerial observation.

The remoteness of the location and the persistent danger of further rockfalls have made immediate access to Dahlmeier extremely difficult. Her team confirmed on Tuesday that no one had yet been able to reach her.

Weather conditions in the region have been exceptionally harsh over the past week, with reports of rain, strong winds, and thick clouds, further complicating rescue operations.

A Champion’s transition to the Mountains

Laura Dahlmeier retired from professional biathlon competition in 2019 at the young age of 25, leaving behind an remarkable legacy. she is a seven-time World Champion gold medalist and made history at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, becoming the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit events at the same Games.

Following her retirement, Dahlmeier transitioned to a career as a biathlon commentator for German broadcaster ZDF and pursued her passion for mountaineering. She had been in Pakistan as the end of June, having already successfully ascended the Great Trango Tower prior to the Laila Peak expedition.

The International Biathlon Union expressed its concern, stating, “We are thinking of Dahlmeier and her family, hoping for good news to emerge soon.” The global sporting community awaits updates on the ongoing rescue efforts for the beloved former champion.
