SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA,Spain (AP) — The Sanitary Area of Santiago de Compostela y Barbanza has named Laura María Souto Caneda as the new chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The appointment, announced earlier this month, places Souto Caneda at the helm of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service of the University Clinical Hospital of Santiago.
Souto Caneda had been serving as the acting head since December 2022, following the departure of Manuel Macía Cortiñas. Her formal appointment was published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (Dog) under the authority of manager Ángel Facio Villanueva.
Background and Experience
Souto Caneda earned her degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). She completed her specialist training at the Xeral Hospital in Galicia, Santiago de Compostela.
Her career has been primarily within the Galician Health Service (Sergas). From 1996 to 2005, she worked as a medical specialist at the Xeral Calde de Lugo hospital.
In July 2005, Souto Caneda became a permanent member of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service at the University Hospital Complex of Santiago de Compostela. Her work focused on gynecological oncology and breast pathology.
