England fast bowler Lauren Filer is aiming to shatter the 80mph barrier, not just as a personal achievement, but to demonstrate the incredible pace women are capable of delivering in cricket and inspire a new wave of fast bowlers. Following a standout performance against India, including the key wicket of Smriti Mandhana,Filer is focused on pushing the boundaries of the women’s game.
Filer’s Fast Bowling Feat and the Pursuit of 80mph
Filer’s recent performance in the T20 victory over India saw her record three of the fastest ten overs ever bowled by a woman in international cricket. This has ignited a conversation about the potential for even greater speeds within the women’s game.
“It’s not necessarily a personal milestone for myself, but actually proving women can get to that milestone, and hopefully others can follow as well,” Filer explained. “I don’t want it just to be one or two people – we want loads of women to be able to be bowling at that speed.”
While the 80mph mark remains officially unbroken in women’s international cricket, Filer believes achieving it will be a notable moment for the sport. She hopes it will encourage aspiring young bowlers to strive for similar speeds, elevating the excitement and competitiveness of women’s cricket.
“I think after Friday, people are probably talking about it more than they were and hopefully if I can hit it [80mph] than it encourages other people to try and aim for that and actually make the game even more exciting than it already is,” the 24-year-old stated.
The growing popularity of women’s cricket is already evident, with Filer noting the eager response she receives from fans. “Obviously the women’s game has gone so prolific over the last few years, and I know that when I come off the pitch, a lot of people say how excited they are to watch the bowling.”
Building Confidence and Handling Pressure
Beyond the pursuit of raw pace, Filer highlighted the importance of mental fortitude and the team’s ability to perform under pressure. England’s recent win against India, despite a challenging batting collapse (losing nine wickets for just 31 runs), showcased a newfound resilience.
“Even as players we felt there was a shift in mentality,” filer revealed. “The mentality we had moving forward and into that game, when good and bad things happened,we stayed level. And I think that’s where we want to be in these pressure situations and show we can do it against the best in the world.”
This ability to remain composed under duress is crucial as England faces a critical juncture in the T20 series against India. Currently trailing 2-1, a win at Old Trafford on wednesday is essential to keep the series alive, before the focus shifts to three One Day Internationals.
Looking Ahead: ODI Series and the women’s World Cup
Filer is also part of the England ODI squad, providing an possibility for fine-tuning and preparation ahead of a busy autumn schedule, culminating in the Women’s World Cup in india.
“We can’t wait to see how we go against India. We obviously played very well against West Indies, I think we want to take that into India and hopefully we can get a few wins before the world Cup,” Filer added, expressing the team’s eagerness to build momentum and confidence leading into the global tournament. The team aims to replicate their strong performance against the West Indies and translate that success into victories against India, setting a positive tone for the challenges ahead.
