Examination Launched Following Revelations of Illegal Grenade Use
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated he was “not happy at all” with videos revealed by Libération and Mediapart concerning the Sainte-Soline demonstration in Deux-Sèvres, France, which took place in March 2023. The videos, captured by gendarmes themselves, appear to show the illegal firing of grenades and orders to do so.
The use of these weapons is prohibited and potentially deadly, as grenades are intended to be deployed in a bell shape to detonate in the air. The footage also contains numerous violent comments from law enforcement officials, some boasting about seriously injuring environmental activists.
Minister Condemns Comments and Actions
Nuñez, speaking on France Inter radio on November 6, 2023, described the “propos” (statements) and “gestures” depicted in the videos as unacceptable. He specifically stated, “The comments that are made are not acceptable, and there are actions that are clearly not regulatory.”
As a result, Nuñez has requested an investigation be opened into the matter.The investigation aims to determine the extent of the misconduct and hold those responsible accountable.
