The 2024 Essence Festival in New Orleans, a celebration of Black culture adn music, was plagued by logistical issues and artist frustrations despite a star-studded lineup. While Lauryn Hill’s highly anticipated closing performance drew the most immediate criticism, a deeper look reveals a weekend marred by delays, technical difficulties, and concerns over artist treatment.
Lauryn Hill’s Delayed Performance and Festival Response
Lauryn Hill’s set, scheduled to close out the festival Saturday night, didn’t begin until 2:30 a.m.,leaving the Caesars Superdome sparsely populated. Hundreds of attendees remained, a stark contrast to the tens of thousands expected for a headlining act of her caliber. She ultimately performed for over an hour, closing with “Fu-Gee-La.”
Hill’s history of tardiness is well-documented – she even acknowledged it in a 2023 performance, telling an audience, ”Y’all lucky I make it.” Though, Essence Festival organizers swiftly took responsibility for the notable delay.
In a statement posted on social media, they defended Hill, stating, “Family is family and around here we protect our own no matter what the PEOPLE have to say…the delay? Not hers. We will take that. the moment? One for the books. The legacy? Still unmatched. Put some respect on her name. Keep the takes, but keep her out of them. All love and deep profound admiration for ms.Lauryn Hill.”
the festival’s response garnered praise online, with many celebrating their “accountability.” Erykah Badu, who also headlined the festival, showed her support with applause emojis on the organizers’ Instagram post.
beyond Hill: Widespread Production Issues
Though, Hill’s late arrival was just one symptom of a larger problem. Reports indicate the festival experienced issues from the start. According to NOLA.com, Hill was added to the lineup only two days before the festival began, prompting fan questions about the planning process. One Instagram user commented, “Does Lauryn know about this?”
The schedule quickly fell behind on opening night.Contemporary R&B trio Psyrin reportedly opened the festival already running late, and GloRilla began her set 45 minutes after her scheduled start time.
These issues extended beyond scheduling. Grammy-winning artist Stephanie Mills publicly voiced her concerns in an open letter to the Essence Festival on Tuesday. Mills, who performed on Sunday, described the event’s “overall level of professionalism” as lacking.
Mills Details backstage Chaos and Technical Difficulties
“While I remain grateful for the opportunity to have participated, my overall experience was unfortunately marred by significant production issues that negatively impacted both my performance and the artist experience as a whole,” Mills wrote. She specifically cited “severely lacking” schedule and time management, creating a “chaotic and stressful environment backstage.”
Moreover, Mills detailed “deeply problematic” technical difficulties, particularly with the sound system. She concluded her letter by calling for a “vastly improved experience” for both artists and fans in future festivals.
What’s Next for the Essence festival?
The 2024 Essence Festival highlighted the challenges of managing a large-scale event with a complex lineup. While the festival’s quick defense of Lauryn Hill resonated with some, the broader issues raised by Mills and reports of widespread delays suggest a need for significant improvements in production and artist relations. The festival’s legacy as a cornerstone of Black culture remains strong, but addressing these concerns will be crucial to ensuring a positive experience for both performers and attendees in the years to come. Organizers have not yet publicly responded to Mills’ open letter as of this publication.
