Ekemezie, from Awka North in Anambra State, nigeria, was allegedly forcefully restrained by officers, witnesses reported. They claim he pleaded, “You’re hurting me.” He collapsed and died soon after arriving at the police station. Swiss authorities contend that Ekemezie attempted to flee during the check and later succumbed to an illness during questioning, despite receiving emergency medical care. The Ekemezie family is demanding transparency in the investigation.
Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor,representing the Ekemezie family,submitted a petition to the Swiss Embassy in Nigeria on May 30,urging an immediate and transparent probe into the death. The Swiss Embassy confirmed that the cantonal Prosecutor’s Office has launched an official inquiry but cited data protection laws as a reason for withholding details, a move that has fueled the family’s frustration.The family is demanding transparency in the investigation.
