LE HAVRE, France – Patients and staff at the Jacques-Monod Hospital in Montivilliers, near Le Havre, are facing parking challenges due to the construction of a new care building. Work began the week of April 14, impacting a notable portion of the hospital’s southern parking lot and reducing available spaces.
The construction project will eliminate approximately 300 parking spaces, representing between 10% and 15% of the total parking capacity, according to Pauline Richoux, deputy director general of the Normandy hospital group.
“We anticipate parking difficulties, notably around 2 p.m., which is typically the busiest time,” Richoux stated. She encouraged individuals to consider alternative transportation methods such as buses or bicycles when possible.
Hospital management also noted the availability of an underground parking garage, which is often less crowded than the surface lot and remains open during the construction period.
Union Concerns Over Accessibility
However, union representatives have expressed concerns about the proposed solutions.Dominique Bourguignon, a staff representative, stated, “We were told to come by bike, that it was pleasant and ecological. but for people who live 40 kilometers away, that is not feasible.”
“We were also told that there was the Auchan parking lot, but at 6:30 a.m. or 9 p.m. when the agents end, it’s late, you have to cross the bridge, it can be anxiety.”
Patient Impact
Patients and their families are also worried about the reduced parking. “I don’t know how we’re going to come,” said Chabane, a patient. “Sometimes, even without the construction, there are no spaces.”
Arnaud, another patient, echoed this sentiment: “More and more people will need hospitalization at Jacques-Monod, so removing parking spaces is a shame, especially for emergencies.”
Construction Timeline
Site preparation is underway, with the main construction phase scheduled to begin on May 12. The project is expected to last until 2027. Upon completion of the new building, the hospital parking lot will permanently lose 200 spaces.
