Lea Michele to Play Florence Vassey Role in ‘chess’ Broadway Revival

Lea Michele will star as Florence Vassey in the upcoming Broadway revival of “Chess.” The production, also featuring Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher, aims to breathe new life into the musical, which had a short run in 1988 despite a memorable score.
Tveit, a Tony winner, will portray Freddie Trumper, an American grandmaster.Christopher will play Anatoly Sergievsky, a Soviet chess challenger. Michele’s role as Florence Vassey is that of Trumper’s second and lover. The revival is set to open in the fall of 2025 at a Shubert Theatre, the specific location remains undisclosed.
The original “Chess” struggled on Broadway, closing after just 68 performances. Its score, tho, which includes “One Night in Bangkok,” has maintained a dedicated following. tim Rice, along with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, created the music.
Danny Strong is writing a new book for this production, replacing the original script by Richard Nelson. Michael Mayer, who directed Michele in her first Broadway lead role in “Spring Awakening” in 2006, will direct.
