Yograj Singh: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Retired From Tests⁤ Too Soon

⁢ Updated June 13, 2025

Former Indian cricketer Yograj singh has voiced his opinion that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two legends of the game, should not have retired from Test cricket. Singh believes both players had more to offer in the Test format, ‌despite ⁣their recent retirements ahead of ‌india’s five-match series in England.

With Sharma’s departure, Shubman Gill has‌ been named as the new test captain for Team India. The first Test against England will mark the⁤ first time since early ⁢2022 that India’s red-ball team will be without Kohli and Sharma.

Singh told Insidesport that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still had the potential to contribute⁤ significantly to the team. He added that they should have ensured a smooth transition for younger players.

“Virat and Rohit shouldn’t have retired from Tests…⁣ Virat and⁤ Rohit can still play for another 5 years‍ in Test cricket. They should have played. they should be there ‍to‍ see that the baton is passed to the youngsters. The baton has not been passed,⁤ it has ⁣been thrown to Gill,” Singh said.
⁣ ‍

Singh also drew parallels⁢ to his own⁢ efforts to dissuade his son, Yuvraj ⁣Singh, from retiring.

⁣ “Even when⁢ Yuvraj was retiring I promised him that I will help him become India captain and that we will throw ⁢everybody out but he quit,” Singh stated.

Notably, Kohli ‍and Sharma experienced a disappointing tour of Australia ⁣in their last ⁢Test series. Kohli averaged under 24 across five ⁢matches, while Sharma averaged‌ a⁣ mere 6.20 in three appearances.

What’s next

With the Test retirement of these two key players, ‍India ⁤will look to it’s younger talent to‍ step up‍ in the upcoming series against⁤ England. The team will need to find ⁣a way ‌to⁢ fill the experience gap left by Kohli and⁤ Sharma as they focus on⁣ future matches.
