Leadville 100 MTB: Drop Bars Banned
Leadville Trail 100 and Little Sugar MTB Ban Drop-Handlebar Bikes
Life Time has banned drop-handlebar bikes from the leadville Trail 100 and Little Sugar MTB races, marking a important shift in the landscape of U.S. mountain bike racing. the decision, announced Friday, aims to improve rider safety and ensure course compatibility.
The change comes as more elite and amateur riders adopted dropped front-ends – traditionally seen on road bikes – to gain aerodynamic advantages on courses that are becoming increasingly fast and resembling road races.
Keegan Swenson, a multiple Leadville champion, popularized the trend with his victory in 2024, riding a bike with drop handlebars. His win brought widespread attention to the potential benefits of this setup.
Life Time confirmed the new regulation in updated rules for its Grand Prix series. The rules explicitly state that “drop-style handlebars (road or gravel bars with drops) are no longer permitted” at Leadville and Little Sugar.
the move represents a major course correction for the iconic races, effectively ending an era of experimentation with front-end configurations.
