Leahey Leads Cardinals to 4-1 Victory Over SUNY Brockport, Advancing to Second Round
SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 4 Wesleyan women’s soccer team won 4-1 against SUNY Brockport in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening at Weiss Field. Kerenza Leahey led the team, helping Wesleyan move forward to the second round against No. 14 Scranton.
Wesleyan will face Scranton on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 3:00 PM. Scranton won their previous match against Marywood with a score of 3-1.
The Cardinals, after a disappointing early exit from the NESCAC Championships, earned their fourth consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. They controlled the game against Brockport, outshooting them 11-3 in the first half. Leahey scored the first goal, firing from outside the box after intercepting a clearance attempt.
In the second half, Leahey scored again shortly after the Cardinals were awarded a free kick. Autumn Edwards narrowed Wesleyan’s lead with a goal, but Sheridan Snow extended it again with a corner kick rebound. O’Connell capped the scoring with her goal on another corner kick.
Wesleyan goalkeeper Molly Brumbach made three saves before Juliette Vemmer took over in goal late in the game. Brockport’s goalie, Madeline McCrosson, ended with four saves.
The Cardinals showcased strong teamwork and resilience to advance in the tournament.
