Leak has expanded its modern Sandwich loudspeaker range with the introduction of the Sandwich 100, a new compact standmount model designed to offer the brand’s signature acoustic engineering at a more accessible price point. This launch marks the third speaker in the revived Sandwich series, joining the Sandwich 250 and Sandwich 150 models that were unveiled in February 2024. The release continues Leak’s broader revival strategy, representing the company’s ongoing output of new products following its return to the market with its first raft of new offerings since the 1970s.
The Sandwich 100 is positioned as the most affordable and compact member of the current Sandwich range, designed specifically for contemporary listening spaces where size and budget are key considerations. Despite its modest dimensions, the manufacturer states that the speaker delivers the hallmark qualities associated with Leak loudspeakers, including speed, articulation, and transparency. The design philosophy roots the modern speaker firmly in the heritage of British hi-fi while utilizing modern materials and engineering techniques.
Heritage of the Sandwich Design
The lineage of the Sandwich series dates back to 1961, when Leak originally introduced a revolutionary driver technology known as the Sandwich cone. The original design took its name from the unique construction of its mid/bass drive unit, which was the first to be made from a sandwich of different materials. This consisted of expanded polystyrene foam situated between two sheets of aluminium foil. By combining a lightweight foam core with aluminium skins, the original design created a diaphragm that was both rigid and exceptionally light.
This construction allowed the driver to respond with remarkable speed and accuracy, producing the clean transient performance that quickly became a hallmark of the Sandwich loudspeaker. More than six decades later, the modern Sandwich series continues this tradition, refining the original concept with contemporary materials. The Sandwich 100 brings this technology into a compact loudspeaker designed for today’s music systems, carrying forward the engineering philosophy that defined its predecessors.
Technical Specifications and Driver Design
Each Sandwich 100 speaker features a specially developed 30mm textile dome tweeter. Leak promises that this component offers superior power handling and delivers an open, finely detailed sound at the higher frequencies. The tweeter is complemented by a new 15cm mid/bass driver, which is built around a long-throw motor system equipped with a high-gauss magnet and low-loss suspension.
The driver cone has been shaped to reinforce stiffness and suppress breakup. According to the company, this engineering choice aims to maintain purity across the vocal range and upper bass. These drive units are integrated using a crossover design that incorporates audiophile-grade polypropylene capacitors, air-core inductors, and low-loss resistors. The purpose of these components is to minimise phase shift and signal loss within the audio path.
Cabinet Construction and Finish
The physical construction of the Sandwich 100 focuses on reducing unwanted vibrations to preserve sonic fidelity. The speakers’ cabinet walls are constructed using an outer layer of MDF and an inner layer of high-density particle board. The different densities of these materials help to scatter panel resonances. A filling of special glue bonds the layers in a bid to improve resonance-damping and further reduce unwanted cabinet vibrations.
Aesthetically, the speaker cabinets feature a walnut finish. The design includes aluminium driver trims and an aluminium insert around the edge of the front baffle, providing a visual contrast to the wood finish. This combination of materials aligns with the brand’s intent to blend classic acoustic principles with modern design elements suitable for contemporary interiors.
Market Positioning and Availability
Peter Comeau, Leak’s director of acoustic design, commented on the development goals for the new model. He stated:
In developing the Sandwich 100, our intention was to make a more compact speaker offering uncompromising sound for a smaller space. And, at the same time, take our new, evolved version of Leak’s classic Sandwich design to a more accessible price point, thus broadening its appeal.

The Leak Sandwich 100 will be available from mid-April 2026. The pricing is set at £449 in the United Kingdom, €649 in Europe, $899 in the United States, and AU$1149 in Australia per pair. At this price point, the speakers are positioned to compete against other standmount options in the market. For context, the Monitor Audio Bronze 50 7G was tested at around £500, $849, and AU$1099, offering a comparison point for consumers evaluating speakers in this category.
This launch follows the company’s comeback in 2020, which marked its first new products since the 1970s. The introduction of the Sandwich 100 completes the current trio of models in the revived range, following the Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250. The expansion of the range demonstrates Leak’s commitment to cementing its place in the modern British hi-fi landscape while leveraging its historical reputation for innovation in driver technology.
