Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Create a Biomimetic Design Lab at a Famous American Art University
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have strengthened their cooperation with Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), an art university in the eastern United States, to conduct research on sustainable eco-friendly design and its application to mobility, such as automobiles.
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia will create a new ‘Regenerative Studio’ at RISD starting in the fall semester and conduct research on biomimetic design. RISD will also deploy dedicated faculty to the studio. The company began research on nature-based future design concepts with RISD in 2020. In 2023, under the theme of ‘Coexistence of Future Life’, research was conducted on various innovative designs, including a brick material that imitates the shape of frog skin to increase moisture absorption, a water filtration system that imitates spider webs, and a building structure that combines reed ventilation structure and Korean ondol system.
Hyundai Motor and Kia announced the results of their research with RISD at the New York Climate Week held in the United States and stated that “circularity and sustainability of vehicle design that maximizes recycling is Hyundai Motor Company’s 100-year design vision.” New York Climate Week is an annual event where corporate executives, policymakers, and civic group officials gather to discuss ways to respond to climate change. It is co-hosted by the United Nations General Assembly and the Climate Group, an international non-profit organization.
While there is no confirmation on how this research will be applied to Hyundai and Kia products, the company expects that continued research will eventually bear fruit. Lee Sang-yeop, Vice President of Global Design at Hyundai Genesis, said, “Through RISD’s Regenerative Studio, we will learn nature’s wisdom and processes and apply them to various sectors, including the design field.”
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia’s collaboration with RISD is a significant step towards achieving their goal of creating sustainable and eco-friendly designs. By learning from nature and applying its principles to design, the company aims to create innovative and environmentally friendly products that will contribute to a more sustainable future.
