Paes’ Arrival: A Chance for Young Indonesian Goalkeepers to Learn
Former Indonesian national team goalkeeper Kurnia Meiga believes the arrival of Maarten Paes presents a valuable chance for young keepers to learn from a seasoned professional.
Meiga, who retired early due to illness, emphasizes the importance of Paes’ experience and playing time. He believes young Indonesian goalkeepers should absorb as much knowledge as possible from the Dutch-born shot-stopper.
“Irrespective of who the goalkeeper is, whether it’s Maarten Paes or another player, provided that they can protect Indonesia’s goal, we will support them,” Meiga said. ”it’s for our beloved country.”
Meiga acknowledges Paes’ superior technique compared to other Indonesian goalkeepers. He stresses the importance of utilizing Paes’ experience gained from playing with top-tier talent at Dallas FC.
“Hopefully, our local goalkeepers can learn from Maarten Paes, his experience, playing time, and techniques,” Meiga added.
He encourages young goalkeepers like Ernando Ari and Cahya Supriyadi to shed any hesitation and actively seek guidance from Paes.
“They should ask a lot of questions,” Meiga advised. ”There might be a sense of shyness or reluctance towards a senior player, but that’s wrong. As young players, we want to surpass our seniors, but we need to learn from them first.”
Meiga, a former Arema FC player, believes experience is invaluable and encourages young players to actively seek knowledge from their seniors.
