(AFP, Beirut, 4th) Online videos showed a large-scale explosion in a village on Lebanon’s southern border Local officials said Israel had destroyed hundreds of houses since last year.
A video widely circulated on the Internet today and later verified showed that more than a dozen explosions occurred simultaneously in Mais Al-Jabal, Lebanon, and many houses were razed to the ground.
Since Israel sent ground troops into southern Lebanon at the end of September, several villages on the border, including Mhaibib and Odaisseh, have seen similar scenes from the air.
In the video shared online, houses scattered across the green hills collapsed in a puff of gray dust.
Israel said the move was aimed at Hezbollah infrastructure near the border, with the aim of driving the Iranian-backed group away and allowing residents to return to northern Israel.
Mayor Abdul-Monhem Choukair said today’s video from Mes Ajaba shows a huge explosion near an abandoned hospital in the village.
The area has been under repeated attack since the cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began last October.
“Seventy percent of Mes al-Ajaba was destroyed. Israel’s enemies are targeting systematic destruction,” Chokel said.
He also said that four people were trapped there and awaiting rescue, ranging in age from 85 to 90 years.
The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) highlighted the fact that Israeli forces blew up at least seven buildings in border villages last month.
A video broadcast last month by Israel’s Channel 12 showed a broadcaster blowing up a building while stationed with soldiers in the village of Aita al-Shaab.
Lebanon’s National Human Rights Commission said: “The ongoing sabotage operations of the Israeli army in southern Lebanon amount to war crimes.”
The National Human Rights Commission pointed out that between October last year and October this year, “at least eight Lebanese villages were systematically and needlessly destroyed in many locations” according to shared satellite images and videos by Israeli soldiers on social media.
