Lebanon Explosion Rocks Hezbollah Stronghold: A Disaster Foretold or a Catastrophic Surprise
Undiscovered for Months: Explosion in Lebanon Damages Hezbollah, Source Says Difficult to Detect in Advance Inspection
Reuters interviewed six sources familiar with the details of the Lebanon caller and the walkie-talkie bombs. They said that a few hours before the beeping explosion happened, the new Jin Abo was still being handed over.
A source familiar with the caller’s parts told Reuters that the radio’s battery contained pentaerythritol tetranitrate, an explosive substance codenamed PETN. Reuters reported earlier this week that Hezbollah failed to find as much as three grams of explosives hidden inside the beepers for months.
A security source said such explosives would be difficult to detect “with any equipment and scanners”. However, the source did not specify what kind of tool Hezbollah uses to scan callers.
Two other sources told Reuters that Hezbollah will screen callers arriving in Lebanon starting in 2022, including transiting the callers through the airport to ensure the callers do not trigger alarms.
However, the pager and walkie-talkie bombs have happened after all, and the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah also admitted that they had been hit very seriously.
