Lebanon in Ruins: Devastating Bomb Blast Claims 8 Lives, Leaves 3,000 Injured in Aftermath of Chaos
Deadly Explosions Rock Lebanon, Killing at Least 8 and Injuring 2,750
At least eight people were killed and 2,750 injured in Lebanon on Tuesday after wireless devices used by members of the militant group Hezbollah exploded across the country.
Hezbollah blamed Israel for the blast and said two of its fighters were killed. Iran’s Mehr news agency reports that Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was among those injured.
Notably, after the start of the Gaza war, Hezbollah instructed its members to avoid cell phones and rely on their own telecommunications system to intercept Israeli crimes.
Hezbollah Official Calls it the “Biggest Security Breach”
According to Reuters, a Hezbollah official said the firing of the callers was the “biggest security breach” the group had faced in its year-long war against Israel. One of the fighters killed was the son of a Hezbollah member of Lebanon’s parliament, Reuters reported, citing two security sources.
Hezbollah’s leadership said it was “against Israel” in its communications.
Israel and Hezbollah Conflict Escalates
Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have been fighting across borders since the Gaza war began last October, the worst escalation in years.
There was no immediate response from the Israeli army.
Explosions Caught on CCTV Footage
CCTV footage from a grocery store has been released by Iranian media, showing a small handheld device placed next to a cashier firing. In other scenes, an explosion appeared to knock down a man standing at a fruit stand in a market area.
Humanitarian Response
Hassan Wasni, head of the Nabati Public Hospital in southern Lebanon, told Reuters that around 40 injured people were being treated at his facility. He said there were injuries on his face, eyes and legs.
The Lebanese Red Cross said it had dispatched more than 50 ambulances and 300 emergency medical staff to help evacuate victims.
Conflict Timeline
Immediately after the October 7 attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel, Hezbollah fired a missile at Israel. Hezbollah and Israel have regularly exchanged fire since then, avoiding major escalation as the war in Gaza escalates.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by hostilities from towns and villages on both sides of the border.
