Lebanon Under Fire: Unraveling the Mystery Behind Israel’s Airstrikes – What’s Next
Israeli Media Reacts to Explosion in Lebanon
Israeli media has focused its discussion on the explosion of communications equipment in Lebanon and Israel’s preparedness to deal with the impact of the attack on its northern border.
A recent explosion in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut resulted in the deaths of 9 people, including a girl, and injured approximately 2,750, mostly members of Hezbollah. The incident led to the use of wireless communication devices (pagers) in the affected areas.
Israeli Media Analysis
Israeli Channel 13 described the attack as a “Hollywood-style coordinated and complex operation” targeting devices used by Hezbollah members. The channel wondered how close it was to a “broad and massive war” with Hezbollah on the northern border.
Danny Yatom, former head of the Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad), expressed uncertainty about the motive behind the attack. He stated, “We don’t know what the motive was and we don’t know who carried it out. Even if it injures and disables 3,000 Hezbollah members from the intermediate level, it is indeed a remarkable achievement, but the question is: what next?”
Nir Dovori, Channel 12’s military affairs correspondent, raised questions about Hezbollah’s goal of blowing up radio communication devices. He commented, “What are the goals of the event? And where does this lead us?”
Expert Insights
Amos Gilad, head of Reichman University’s Institute for Policy and Strategy, discussed Hezbollah’s blame on Israel for the incident. He wondered if Israel had a strategy to counter the attack, asking, “What will Israel do? Will it respond escalating? Are we ready for a large-scale operation? For what? And against whom is Hezbollah not hesitant to expand the war?”
Gay Hein, a former officer in Israel’s Internal Security Service (Shin Bet), called for a tough response to Hezbollah. He stated, “We must make Hezbollah clear or create a state of resistance. It should be realized that they should not take the initiative to do anything and it will be expressed about the ability to prevent it with great force by attacking the infrastructure of Lebanon or sending a message to Nasrallah outside of it.”
Impact on Israeli Politics
Israeli Channel 12 reported the suspension of talks between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Right Party chief Gideon Saar over the replacement of Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
The situation in the political system remains in turmoil, with former chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot calling on Sa’ar not to allow Netanyahu’s bad moves to enable him to resolve the issue.
