LOS ANGELES (AP) ‍— The Los Angeles Lakers are entering an offseason of notable questions after a first-round playoff exit at the hands ‍of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team must address its frontcourt deficiencies,⁤ find ways to better integrate Luka Doncic, ⁣and navigate the future of LeBron James.

Playoff Disappointment

After finishing third in the Western Conference during the ⁤regular season, the Lakers were eliminated by ‍the‍ Timberwolves in five games, ⁢mirroring ‌their first-round exit against Denver last year. The ‍Lakers struggled to find answers, especially in their 103-96 Game 5 loss at home Wednesday.

“We turned⁣ the ball‌ over too much and gave up too many offensive rebounds,” saeid coach JJ Redick. “Given our scoring struggles early in the series, we needed to find a compromise.‌ You could say ‘+pivot+,’ but we couldn’t score with it.”⁣ Redick‍ faced criticism for limiting the playing time of center Jaxson Hayes.

Redick added, “We managed‍ to put ourselves in a position to stay‍ in the game three times in the fourth quarter, but we couldn’t get over the hump. Our offense faltered; we missed open three-pointers and shots near the basket when we‌ had ⁢created good opportunities.”

Analyst azad Rosay, a contributor⁢ to‌ the Dreamcast Show on YouTube, told AFP that the Lakers lacked “circle ⁤protection against Minnesota, which was⁢ not very effective in the circle this season (13th out ⁤of 30 in the NBA in frequency in the circle).”

Rosay noted Minnesota frequently used “isolation” plays to target defensively vulnerable players like Luka Doncic and austin Reaves, exploiting the Lakers’ lack of rim protection.

Addressing the‌ Pivot Position

The Lakers⁣ traded Anthony Davis to Dallas in February for‌ Luka Doncic, losing one of the NBA’s top interior players of⁣ the past decade. The team ‍struggled to find a suitable replacement.

Rudy Gobert dominated the Lakers in Game 5, scoring ⁤27 points and grabbing 24 rebounds.

“When you make a major trade near the deadline, developing your roster‌ is like trying⁤ to build a plane in the air,” said Lakers General Manager⁤ Rob Pelinka on Thursday.

“In the offseason, our primary goal will be to add size to⁢ our frontcourt, particularly at the center position.‍ We have a ⁢lot of work to do, and the roster will certainly look different next season.”

Doncic’s Integration

Sence arriving in February, Luka Doncic, who led Dallas to the Finals last year, has shown flashes of brilliance. However, he suggested that the adaptation period with his new teammates was⁢ too short.

“These things take time,” Redick⁢ said.”The chemistry between Doncic and Irving in Dallas took time to develop. We found some chemistry between lebron and Luka, but it could have⁤ been better, especially in the‌ fourth quarters of playoff games.”

LeBron James added, “Whenever⁢ a team makes a significant trade during the season, ‌it presents a challenge for everyone.”

“All the dynamics ‌change. Some games weren’t pretty, but we managed to adapt, even though I think we needed more time.”

Rosay believes‍ adding “big”⁤ players would provide “vertical threats that‌ work very well with Doncic,” who is known for⁢ his passing ability on alley-oop plays.

LeBron’s Future

“How many more years are‌ you going to play?” ⁣James, ⁣who finished his 22nd NBA season on wednesday, remained noncommittal about his future at age ‍40.

James signed a two-year contract extension with the Lakers last July worth an estimated $100 million, with the second year ($52 million) being a player option.

“I’m going‌ to talk with my wife, my family, and ⁢have a conversation with myself about how long I want to continue‌ playing. We’ll see,”⁣ he said.

Pelinka included James in his future plans, expressing a desire to build around a trio of james, ‍Doncic, and Reaves: “We will make sure they are surrounded‍ with the right elements to allow this group to win⁤ a title.”

James could sign ⁣another contract, potentially for less money than his current option, to⁤ give‍ the Lakers more financial versatility to⁢ acquire new players.
