Singapore Smash 2026: Lebrun Brothers Advance, Gauzy Battles Through

The Grand Smash in Singapore saw strong performances from French table tennis players on Sunday, with Félix Lebrun and Simon Gauzy securing victories to advance to the next round. Félix Lebrun demonstrated dominant form, while Gauzy faced a tougher challenge in his opening match.

Lebrun Cruises into Round of 16

Félix Lebrun, the world No. 6, made a swift and decisive entry into the tournament, defeating Romanian Eduard Ionescu in straight sets. The match concluded in just 18 minutes, with Lebrun winning 11-4, 13-11, and 11-6. This victory marks a strong start for the 18-year-old, particularly after a recent defeat to his brother in the semi-finals of the European Top 16 in Montreux. Lebrun’s record against Ionescu now stands at 8-0.

Lebrun will next face Vladislav Ursu of Moldova, who overcame Australian Aditya Sareen in three sets (15-13, 11-7, 11-7) to earn his place in the round of 16. The contrast in rankings – Lebrun at No. 6 and Ursu at No. 132 – suggests a favorable matchup for the Frenchman.

Gauzy Survives Five-Set Thriller

Simon Gauzy’s path to the next round was considerably more arduous. He was forced to a five-set battle against Nicholas Lum of Singapore, ultimately prevailing 6-11, 12-10, 13-15, 12-10, and 14-12. The match was characterized by numerous twists and turns, requiring Gauzy to dig deep and overcome a slow start.

Gauzy will now meet Jonghoon Lim of South Korea in the round of 16. This will be a crucial match for the Frenchman as he looks to build momentum in the tournament.

French Contingent Continues Competition

The French presence at the Singapore Smash extends beyond Lebrun, and Gauzy. Flavien Coton is also competing, scheduled to play against Benedikt Duda, the No. 10 seed. Further matches are anticipated on Monday, with Lilian Bardet facing Taiwanese Yun-Ju Lin, Thibault Poret challenging Japanese Yukiya Uda, and Alexis Lebrun, seeded 13th, taking on Taiwanese Yi-Hsin Feng.

Alexis Lebrun’s match against Feng is particularly noteworthy given his seeding and potential to make a deep run in the tournament. The Singapore Smash 2026 is proving to be a significant event for French table tennis, with multiple players vying for success on the international stage.
