Lee Cheuk-yiu, a Hong Kong badminton player, has advanced to the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships. Cheuk-yiu, who was wearing a white shirt, faced Malaysia’s Liang Junhao for the first time in a tour.
Cheuk-yiu played a thrilling match, coming from behind to win the first game 21-14. He fell behind again in the early stage of the second game but managed to catch up, only to lose 15-21. The match was tied at one game each.
In the decisive third game, Cheuk-yiu reversed the situation after falling behind by more than eight points. He experienced six ties to catch up to 21-21 and eventually won 24-22 with a “trick” shot.
Cheuk-yiu, who is considered the “big brother” of the Hong Kong team, said that he had to control his mentality and try not to make his performance erratic. He credited his improved physical fitness for his ability to survive and win the game.
“I’m still a little dazed because I fell behind by a large score in the third game,” Cheuk-yiu said. “I slowly caught up point by point. I didn’t think about anything (during the process), and played well point by point. My physical fitness has improved, although it’s not very good, at least I survived and won the game.”
Cheuk-yiu will advance to the semi-finals with the national team’s Lei Lanxi.
