by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Amstelveen, Netherlands and Munich, Germany – Publisher Mindscape and developer Aesir Interactive are preparing to launch the Early Access version of The Legend of Khiimori on , for both Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game, a system-driven open-world adventure set in 13th-century Mongolia, distinguishes itself through a deep commitment to authentic sound design and a realistic equine experience built on Unreal Engine 5.

While open-world games featuring horses are not uncommon, The Legend of Khiimori places particular emphasis on the cultural and sonic landscape of its setting. The developers are collaborating with traditional Mongolian band Khukh Mongol and Zolzaya Boldbaatar, a master of the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), to create a dynamic soundscape that reflects the diverse biomes players will traverse – from steppes and deserts to mountain peaks. This isn’t simply about adding Mongolian instruments to a soundtrack. it’s about weaving the musical traditions of the era into the very fabric of the gameplay experience.

According to Aesir Interactive, the music will adapt to the player’s environment, enhancing immersion. This adaptive score is a key element in bringing the 13th-century Mongolian setting to life. A recently released video showcases the creative process behind the soundtrack, highlighting the team’s prioritization of audio authenticity from the outset. The developers emphasize that the music is intended to reach the player emotionally, creating a deeper connection to the game world.

Courier Life in 13th-Century Mongolia

Players assume the role of a courier rider, tasked with charting the Mongolian landscape and delivering packages and cargo. The gameplay loop centers around strategic route planning to avoid dangers, completing quests, and managing resources. Survival elements are present, requiring players to craft items like powder pouches and arrows. However, the core of the experience revolves around the relationship between the rider and their horse.

The game’s developers have invested heavily in creating a realistic equine experience. Players will breed and train horses with specialized traits, recognizing that different breeds possess unique strengths. Maintaining a strong bond with these animals is crucial, unlocking their full potential and allowing players to become skilled Yam courier riders – a historically significant role in Mongolian society. The developers state that the equine behavior and animation have been refined and approved by experts, aiming for an unprecedented level of realism.

A System-Driven Open World

Beyond the courier duties, The Legend of Khiimori incorporates elements of Mongolian mythology. Players will be able to free corrupted zones from evil spirits, adding a layer of supernatural challenge to the open-world exploration. The game is described as “system-driven,” suggesting that player actions have meaningful consequences and contribute to a dynamic, evolving world. This system-driven approach allows players to shape their own experience within the game’s framework.

The game’s emphasis on resource management extends to establishing and maintaining a nomad camp. Players will need to carefully manage items and resources, ensuring their horses are well-cared for and equipped for the challenges ahead. Strategic planning is paramount, not only for delivery routes but also for navigating the harsh terrain and overcoming obstacles.

Early Access and Future Plans

The launch marks the beginning of the Early Access phase. Mindscape and Aesir Interactive intend to actively collaborate with the community to refine and expand the game. A full release on PC and consoles is planned following the Early Access period. The developers see this as an opportunity to shape the game alongside its players, incorporating feedback and addressing any issues that arise.

Interested players can currently wishlist The Legend of Khiimori on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the PlayStation Store. Mindscape, with over 30 years of experience in publishing and distributing video games, is handling the publishing duties, while Aesir Interactive, a team of 105 professionals, is responsible for the game’s development. Aesir Interactive has a proven track record of developing and operating games, and they emphasize the importance of team spirit and individual excellence in their approach.

The game’s development builds upon Aesir Interactive’s previous work in horse-riding simulations, drawing inspiration from Mongolia’s famed horse-riders. The Legend of Khiimori aims to be more than just a simulation, however; it’s a fully realized open-world adventure that immerses players in the rich culture and challenging landscape of 13th-century Mongolia.
