Former Argentine football international Antonio Rattin died at the age of 84, according to reports by the Slovak news agency TASR published on July 12, 2026. Rattin spent his entire 14-year professional career playing as a defensive midfielder for Boca Juniors, where he won six Argentine league titles and reached the 1963 Copa Libertadores final. According to TASR, Rattin’s international career included appearances at two FIFA World Cups. He represented Argentina at the 1962 tournament in Chile and the 1966 tournament in England.

The 1966 World Cup Incident and the Birth of Cards

The defining moment of Rattin’s career occurred during the 1966 World Cup quarterfinal match between Argentina and host nation England at Wembley Stadium. According to TASR, Rattin initially refused to leave the pitch, staging a prolonged and theatrical protest. As he finally walked off the field, he damaged a corner flag bearing the flag of Great Britain, which provoked angry reactions from spectators who began throwing objects onto the pitch. The incident prompted Kenneth George Aston, then head of the FIFA referees’ committee, to devise a universal visual system for player discipline. Inspired by traffic light color sequences, Aston conceived the yellow and red card system to overcome language barriers during matches, which FIFA subsequently introduced at the 1970 World Cup.
