Born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Jones first became known as a jazz arranger and bandleader in the 1950s.

He quickly moved into pop music and film, arranging hits for Lesley Gore and working closely with Frank Sinatra and Count Basie.

Joncy became the first black musician to be nominated for an Academy Award in 1968 for his song “The Eyes of Love,” and was nominated again the same year for the music of “In Cold Blood.”
