College of Alameda has announced the appointment of former NBA star Gary Payton as the new head coach of its men’s basketball team. This move is expected to bring a new era of leadership and success to the team.
According to College of Alameda athletic director Ramound Vaughn, Payton’s hiring was a strategic decision that aligns with the school’s values. “He’s always been a leader and a winner. We know Coach Payton holds his players accountable not only on the court, but in the classroom and in the community. During the interview process, we talked about our student-athletes giving back to their communities. The energy and passion he brings is unmatched.”
Payton, a 17-year NBA veteran, is renowned for his exceptional defensive skills, earning him the nickname “The Glove.” He made history as the first point guard to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award. Payton’s son, Gary Payton II, currently plays for the Warriors.
Payton’s coaching experience includes a three-year stint as head coach at Lincoln University, a financially struggling NAIA school in Oakland, California. He has also coached in the 3-on-3 league “Big3 League” since its inception in 2017, leading his team to victory this season and earning the title of Coach of the Year. Payton’s induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame is a testament to his outstanding contributions to the sport.
College of Alameda’s men’s basketball team is looking to rebuild after a 7-21 season in the Bay Valley Conference. Payton’s coaching philosophy, which emphasizes community involvement and self-improvement, is expected to bring a positive change to the team’s culture. With Payton at the helm, the team is poised for growth and improvement.
Payton’s appointment marks a new chapter in his illustrious career, and College of Alameda is eager to see the impact he will have on its men’s basketball team.
