Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain, Global Music Icon, Dies at 73
San Francisco, CA – Zakir Hussain, one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians and a global ambassador for tabla, passed away on Sunday at the age of 73. The legendary percussionist succumbed to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease, at a hospital in san Francisco.
hussain’s family released a statement expressing profound grief, highlighting his immense contributions to music and education. “His prolific work as a teacher, mentor, and educator has left an indelible mark on countless musicians. He hoped to inspire the next generation to go further,” the statement read.”He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians of all time.”
Born in mumbai in 1951, Hussain was immersed in the world of music from infancy. The son of legendary tabla artist Alla Rakha, he began learning the instrument at the tender age of seven under his father’s tutelage. Both father and son were bestowed with the honorific “Ustad,” an Urdu term signifying mastery.
Hussain’s journey with tabla began even earlier, as he recounted in a 2023 interview on CBC’s Q with Tom Power. Instead of traditional prayers, his father would whisper tabla rhythms into his ear as a newborn. This early exposure, Hussain believed, imprinted itself on his subconscious, shaping his lifelong passion for the instrument.
A child prodigy, Hussain embarked on his musical journey at the age of 12, touring extensively and performing alongside India’s most revered classical musicians during his teenage years. His career spanned six decades, marked by groundbreaking collaborations with renowned artists across genres.
