Legia Warsaw: Pankov Exit & Transfer Concerns Emerge

Radovan Pankov, a defender for Legia Warsaw, has announced his departure from the club at the end of the current season. The announcement comes amidst a period of uncertainty for Legia, with the team currently sitting tenth in the Ekstraklasa table and facing questions about the future of head coach Marek Papszun.

Pankov revealed his decision in a statement on Legia.net, thanking the fans for their support during his time with the club. According to reporting from Przegląd Sportowy, Pankov has already reached an agreement with a new employer, reportedly a Japanese club, and will receive a significant salary increase.

The news of Pankov’s departure was met with a somewhat surprised reaction from coach Marek Papszun. SportoweFakty reported that Papszun stated he was unaware of Pankov’s decision, saying, “I didn’t know that Pankov was leaving.” This revelation adds another layer of complexity to the situation at Legia, with Papszun also commenting on transfer decisions generally, stating, “Part of the decisions are made behind my back.”

Legia’s Struggles and Pankov’s Assessment

Legia Warsaw has experienced a challenging season, currently holding tenth place in the Ekstraklasa after twelve matches. Their record stands at four wins, four draws, and four losses, totaling sixteen points. The team has struggled for consistency, winning only one of their last five league matches.

Pankov, in an interview with Meczyki.pl, identified a key issue plaguing the team: a lack of finishing. “Our biggest problem is effectiveness,” he stated. “On Sunday, we created one good chance, which we missed. But it’s not just a matter of the forwards – when we attack, it’s everyone, and when we defend, it’s everyone too. As a team, we need to create more chances.” He also expressed concern about the team’s overall form, admitting, “I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel at the moment.”

Papszun’s Position and a History of Coaching Changes

The team’s poor performance has led to speculation about the future of coach Edward Iordanescu, but Pankov believes the problem lies with the players, not the manager. “The problem is the players,” Pankov asserted. “Since I arrived here, how many times have we changed coaches? Three. One of them is now in Serie A…”

Marek Papszun took over as head coach prior to the current season. His position has been subject to scrutiny given the team’s results. Michał Żewłakow, Legia’s sporting director, has expressed a desire to extend Pankov’s contract, but acknowledged the difficulty of doing so given the player’s demands and offers from other clubs, as reported by Przegląd Sportowy.
