The project was spurred by the release of an official LEGO typewriter model in 2021. While aesthetically pleasing and featuring moving parts like a carriage, the official set lacked true functionality; it couldn’t actually produce text. Koenkun Bricks, unsatisfied with this limitation, embarked on a mission to build a working model that would genuinely type.

The resulting LEGO typewriter doesn’t operate like a traditional machine. Instead of ink and paper, it utilizes LEGO character tiles. These tiles are “punched” onto a reusable baseplate, effectively acting as the page. This ingenious redesign allows the typewriter to remain a manageable size – roughly comparable to a classic Remington Cadet – while still delivering a tactile typing experience.

The mechanics are surprisingly complex, relying on a combination of traditional LEGO pieces, rare bricks from LEGO’s history, and even elastic bands. When a key is pressed, a corresponding hopper opens, releasing a specific letter tile via gravity. A ramp and guiding arch ensure the tile lands correctly, facing upwards on the baseplate. The release of the key activates a rubber band-driven pusher that propels the tile into place.

Koenkun Bricks’ design cleverly simulates the letter placement process without needing complex print mechanics. The arrangement of the 26 letters presented a spatial challenge, requiring careful consideration of the limited space available.

Beyond simply proving the concept, Koenkun Bricks put the typewriter to practical use, composing a message to the LEGO team. The message read: “Dear LEGO team, your toy fills my days with limitless creative crafting. Kind regards, Koenkun Bricks.” This demonstrates the machine’s ability to type any message, imperfections and all.

The build process itself was a significant undertaking, thoroughly documented in a detailed YouTube video. This video breaks down the engineering challenges and solutions step-by-step, offering insight into the ingenuity required to overcome the limitations of the LEGO system. The creator’s intuitive engineering brain was key to the success of the project.

The LEGO typewriter’s horizontal paper advance utilizes a reverse ratcheting mechanism activated by the key press and timed to the key release. Vertical paper advancement, however, remains a manual process, requiring the user to wind a spool to lift the entire sheet.
