Donated 1.3 billion yuan to his alma mater
Xiaomi Charity Foundation has made many donations to support the construction and development of Chinese universities, and Lei Jun has personally made many donations to his alma mater, Wuhan University, to support its development.
According to Wuhan University News, on the morning of November 29, 2023, Lei Jun, a 1987 Computer Science alumnus of Wuhan University and founder, chairman and CEO of Xiaomi Group, donated 1.3 billion yuan to his alma mater. Lei Jun said that this donation mainly focuses on three directions: supporting basic research in six major disciplines of mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, history and philosophy, supporting scientific and technological innovation in the field of computer science, and supporting the training of college students.
According to Lei Jun’s recollection, more than 30 years ago, as a representative of outstanding students, he was awarded the highest scholarship at Wuhan University at that time, a full 2,000 yuan.
“For a student from an ordinary county town family, this is really a huge sum of money. To this day, I still remember clearly how excited and proud I felt at that time.” Lei Jun said that he secretly vowed in his heart at that time, “However much scholarship I receive today, I will pay it back ten times, a hundred times, or even ten thousand times in the future.”
In 1997, six years after graduation, Lei Jun began donating to his alma mater when his salary was only 4,000 yuan. According to Lei Jun, he donated money to set up the “Lei Jun Scholarship” (then called the “Tengfei Scholarship”) at the School of Computer Science, and has been donating for 26 years to date (2023).
As for why he continues to donate, Lei Jun said, “Wuhan University taught me knowledge, allowed me to learn how to study, guided me on a lifelong path of scientific and technological exploration, and gave me the most important wealth in my life. Over the years, I always think of the support given to me by my alma mater, and my heart is always full of gratitude. In my mind, Wuhan University is the best university in the world, bar none. I think all alumni think so too. In order to make Wuhan University better and better, everyone can give back to their alma mater with practical actions, whether they have money or manpower.”
In addition, Lei Jun also said that donations never advocate comparison. Many alumni donated to this event, and each donation is a reflection of the alumni’s love for their alma mater, and they are equally important.
Lei Jun expressed his hope that through this donation, he could support Wuhan University in achieving even greater success in the future and enable more outstanding scholars, engineers, scientists and technology entrepreneurs to emerge in China.
