A 76-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with multiple child cruelty offences. Jon Ruben, of Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, appeared before Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, facing three counts of wilfully assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, abandoning, or exposing children in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health.
the alleged offences relate to three boys who attended the summer camp at Stathern Lodge, Canal Lane, Stathern, between July 25th and July 29th. The court heard that the charges are connected to sweets that were allegedly laced with sedatives.
Leicestershire police were alerted to the situation on Sunday, following reports that children at the venue had become unwell. as a precautionary measure, eight boys, aged between eight and 11, along with one adult, were transported to the hospital. All have since been discharged.
During the brief,four-minute hearing,Mr. Ruben, who appeared in court wearing a gray sweatshirt, confirmed his name, date of birth, and address. He did not indicate his pleas. The chair of the magistrates, Elizabeth Needham, informed him that his next appearance will be at Leicester Crown Court on August 29th.Mr.Ruben was initially arrested on Monday evening at a nearby pub on suspicion of administering poison or a noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve, or annoy.
