Lena Headey has revealed details regarding a role she filmed for Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder
that was ultimately removed from the final theatrical release.
In an interview with ScreenRant conducted in April 2026, the Game of Thrones
actress disclosed that she was part of a trio of characters who were cut from the film during the editing process.
Headey explained that she, along with actor Angus Sampson and Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, portrayed a coven of witches. According to Headey, the coven was an original creation of director Taika Waititi.
The Role of the Underworld Guides
The witches were designed to serve as guides for the God of Thunder as he navigated the underworld. Headey described the characters as being very, very funny and kind of insane
.

“I wasn’t in it, but I worked on it. There were three of us. We were [a] coven of witches. I think it was Taika’s invention, and they were kind of Thor’s guide in the underworld, but they were very, very funny and kind of insane. I think there was this whole story of like, ‘They got fired,’ when actually it was just like, ‘What are they doing here?’ But I think the intention was to find this land for them to have their own adventures. It was myself, Angus Sampson, and Da’Vine Joy, so it was quite a trio of madness… So yeah, bummer that we didn’t make the cut”

The inclusion of a witch coven in the underworld aligns with other Greek mythological elements incorporated into the film, such as the appearances of Zeus, played by Russell Crowe, and Hercules, played by Brett Goldstein.
Reasons for the Deletions
Headey addressed previous rumors suggesting that the actors had been fired from the production, clarifying that these claims were inaccurate. Instead, she stated that Waititi simply determined that their specific storyline was unnecessary for the final cut of the movie.
The actress noted that the director had originally hoped to develop a separate setting or land where the trio could have their own adventures.
Despite the amount of work put into the scenes, the footage has not been released as a deleted scene. Waititi has previously indicated that Notice no plans to release such material to the public.
Production and Career Context
The revelation comes as Headey promotes her upcoming thriller film, Ballistic
. During the discussion of her MCU experience, she spoke highly of her co-stars, describing Da’Vine Joy Randolph as a delight
and a joy
to work with.
Thor: Love and Thunder
was released in 2022 and received mixed reviews from critics. Despite the critical reception, the film achieved significant commercial success, grossing $760.9 million at the worldwide box office.
The removal of the coven scenes was part of a broader trend during the film’s development, as Waititi confirmed that several roles that were significant in the early stages of the project were either sidelined or removed entirely before the film reached theaters.
