We sat down with Craig to discuss his accomplishments, the significance of this award, and his vision for the future of emergency medical services.

News Directory 3: Congratulations on receiving the Governor General Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal, Craig! Can you tell us what this award means to you?

Craig Jones: Thank you! This award is a tremendous honor, not just for me personally but for the entire Lennox and Addington Paramedic Services team. It recognizes the hard work and dedication of all paramedics in Ontario who strive to provide exemplary care to our communities, often in challenging circumstances. Receiving the First Bar is particularly meaningful as it represents 30 years of service, a milestone I am proud to reach.

NDD: Your leadership has been praised, especially concerning community health programs. What initiatives have you been particularly passionate about?

CJ: I’ve always believed in the importance of holistic healthcare, which includes addressing mental health and addiction. Our community health programs aim to provide resources and support to individuals facing these challenges. Through collaboration with local organizations, we’ve been able to enhance our services, ensuring that support is available not only during emergencies but also in daily life.

NDD: How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect your work and the effectiveness of your department?

CJ: The pandemic tested all of us in ways we never anticipated. Our team adapted quickly, embracing new protocols to keep our patients and ourselves safe while ensuring that we continued to deliver critical care. It was heartwarming to see the community come together and support one another during such a difficult time. This experience reinforced my belief in the resilience of our team and the importance of emergency services in public health.

NDD: You were recognized by Michael Tibollo, Ontario’s associate minister of mental health and addictions. How crucial is government support in enhancing paramedic services?

CJ: Government support is vital. It enables us to implement training, purchase necessary equipment, and develop programs that directly impact patient care. The recognition from Minister Tibollo signals that the work we do is valued at a higher level, which motivates us to continue striving for excellence in service delivery.

NDD: Looking to the future, what do you see as the greatest challenges and opportunities for paramedics?

CJ: The greatest challenge remains ensuring adequate resources to meet the growing demands of our communities. As population health needs evolve, so must our services. However, this presents an opportunity to innovate and integrate technology into our responses. With advancements in telemedicine and community paramedicine, we can enhance how we care for those who need it most. I am excited about the future and the potential to continue improving our services.

NDD: do you have any message for those who are considering a career in paramedicine?

CJ: Absolutely. If you are passionate about helping others and thrive in dynamic environments, a career in paramedicine is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just a job; it’s a commitment to making a positive impact in people’s lives. I encourage aspiring paramedics to pursue this path—there’s nothing quite like the fulfillment of serving your community.

As Craig Jones continues to lead and inspire, his dedication to the field exemplifies the values of compassion, resilience, and innovation in emergency medical services. We congratulate him once again on this milestone and look forward to the future of Lennox and Addington Paramedic Services under his guidance.

The Governor General Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal was established in 1994 to recognize paramedics who deliver high-quality care despite potential risks. To qualify, paramedics must have at least ten years of service in the field.
