There was a time when lenny Kravitz rode the subway. This was after he no longer needed to sell fish sandwiches or wash dishes to make ends meet. He was working as a studio musician in Los Angeles, flying on budget airlines to New York each month, trying to break through with his own music.
That breakthrough came in 1991. “I was going to the recording studio. I get out of the subway, and while I’m waiting at the intersection,I hear my song ‘It Ain’t Over ’til it’s Over’ playing from the radios in the cars. That was a turning point,” he recalls about the beginning of his fame.
Nearly 35 years have passed as then. While his fame might not be as dizzying as it was at the turn of the millennium, when he won four consecutive Grammy Awards and topped the charts, people still flock to see Lenny Kravitz. Last year, he performed at the Champions League final in London’s Wembley Stadium and at the formula 1 races in Singapore. He also earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received an MTV award for best rock video.
A Charismatic Performance in Prague
Visitors to the sold-out O2 arena in Prague witnessed the enduring power of his charisma this Wednesday. Lenny Kravitz was unmistakable from the frist moments, when he emerged on stage via a lift built into the floor, tossing his dreadlocks that reached below his shoulders. He sported huge black glasses and a light blue leather jacket ending above his bare waist, which the camera highlighted on the big screens throughout the evening, showcasing the sixty-year-old musician’s excellent shape.
when he sings, the golden hoops on his guitar strap and the amulet around his neck sway along with his hair. Tattoos are visible: a Japanese dragon on his chest and an African bracelet on his right wrist. His signature silhouette in low-slung jeans is completed by a Gibson Flying V guitar, a trademark for Kravitz.
European Roots
Lenny Kravitz is no stranger to Europe, where he enjoys greater popularity than in the USA. He has been touring here sence 1989.On his first tour, he experienced the fall of the Berlin Wall in the German capital. “People were smashing it to pieces with pickaxes and hammers. I took my grandfather with me, who had never been to the old continent. So he went out, chipped off a piece of the wall, and stuck it in his pocket,” the musician recounts in his 2020 autobiography, “Let Love Rule.”

He first visited the Czech Republic in the mid-1990s. Since then, he has performed at various events, including the PPF group’s Christmas party at Prague Castle in 2016, and at the Colours of Ostrava festival last year, where 50,000 spectators, including President Petr Pavel, watched him.
Let Love Rule
lenny Kravitz writes, produces, and largely records almost everything on his albums himself, from drums and bass to keyboards and backing vocals. However,he doesn’t need to emphasize this in Prague. He simply plays guitar diligently throughout the nearly two-hour concert until the final song, “Let Love rule,” from his debut album released in 1989.
While keyboardist George Laks solos on the Hammond organ, the star of the evening approaches the front rows, greeting the audience at length until he crosses the O2 arena to the other end. From there, he conducts the audience in a choral rendition of ”Let Love Rule.”
Originally, it was a slogan that lenny Kravitz scribbled with a marker on the wall of a bohemian new York apartment where he was staying, before he first heard his music playing from cars at an intersection. Almost everything has changed since then, but the slogan has endured. “My music is about spreading love,” he summarized in a podcast last year. Everything remains the same.
