Leo XIV: Catechesis & Jesus Christ
XIII Scala Assembly Focuses on Evangelization, Catechist Formation, and Digital Culture in Latin America
The XIII Scala Assembly is currently underway in Asunción, Paraguay, bringing together scholars and catechesis specialists from across Latin America until July 11th. This notable gathering focuses on strengthening the evangelizing mission of the Church through research, theological reflection, and a commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
A Society Dedicated to Evangelization
SCALA (Sociedad de Catequistas Latinoamericanos) is a distinguished group comprised of scholars and researchers dedicated to the study of catechesis throughout Latin America. Founded on July 13, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas, the association held its constitutive assembly in Santo domingo, Dominican Republic, in July 1997, where its foundational Statute was approved.
For three decades, SCALA has served as a vital forum for faithful individuals driven by a deep concern for the realities of Latin American communities and guided by the Holy Spirit. Through assemblies and study days, members collaborate to enhance the quality of catechesis and contribute meaningfully to the Church’s evangelizing efforts in the region. The organization’s core mission is to seek ways to improve Christian initiation processes and foster a deeper understanding of the faith.
The Formation of the Catechist and the Inculturation of the Gospel
Led by President Father Mario Alberto Segura Bonilla of Costa Rica, the assembly in Paraguay provides a crucial space for continued “reflection, service, research and free exchange of experiences around catechesis.” Participants are dedicated to building upon the legacy of the organization and inspiring future pathways for evangelization.
“Scala’s journey has embodied in his walk the great concerns of the Latin American Church: the inculturation of the Gospel, the formation of the catechist as a pastoral subject, the renewal of the processes of Christian initiation, and today, the synodal response to the challenges of digital culture,” stated Father Segura Bonilla. This highlights SCALA’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the Church and its people.
The assembly’s agenda is deeply rooted in the synodal path championed by Pope Francis, emphasizing listening, communion, and mission. This approach ensures that the Church remains responsive to the needs of its members and the broader world. The event draws participation from experts representing 12 countries, alongside delegates from all Paraguayan dioceses, and includes Costa Rican priest Francisco Hernández, representing the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM). Attendees will share innovative methodologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and proven experiences from diverse Latin American contexts, fostering a collaborative environment for learning and growth. The focus is on equipping catechists with the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively share the Gospel in a culturally relevant and impactful way.
